The Traveling Mag Project:
May 2007 - Present
Inspired by the well-known 1,000 Journals project, I started this among a small group of my favorite bloggers on Open Diary.
It grew to include 60+ people in 9 countries and is expanding steadily. Members range from students to professional American artist William H. Miller of Texas and published Ukranian poet, Ilya Kaminsky who now lives and teaches in San Diego, California.
Notebooks are sent around the world and filled with any form of creativity. They are passed on like a round robin.
Recently, the project branched off into smaller notebooks so they move faster, and a supplemental online version called The Homebody Mag.
The countries currently represented are America, Canada, England, Scotland, Finland, Norway, Cyprus, Australia and New Zealand.
The goal is to inspire and be inspired by expressions of creativity from around the world, to connect different cultures. |
Jammin' for Jamaica:
September - December 2006
Initiated and managed as part of an award-winning SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team under the guidance of Dr. Franklin B. Krohn at SUNY Fredonia, this project is being continued by new students, which means the website we initially set up may be altered.
My four-member team put forth the initial efforts and ideas, but hopefully it will continue to grow.
The main fundraising portion came from a benefit concert that was played by four bands and attended by about 250 students, teachers and community members.
Jammin' for Jamaica raised money toward a recording studio, blank CDs and instruments for people living in poverty in Jamaica.
We also created a website and began teaching this group of talented people to market their music to tourists and local radio stations.

The Splash Dabbler:
May - December 2006
In some respects, The Splash Dabbler was similar to The Traveling Mag Project, only this one stayed put more like a webzine.
Weekly requests for submissions and updated writing prompts kept the interest of regular visitors and a list of contributors show a wide variety of people representing 8 countries.
The content ranged from music and movie recommendations and reviews, to short stories, articles, photography, drawings, poetry, travel tips, drink recipes and weekly columns from four different writers as well as a guest column with the topic 'fascinating lives."
Another feature was the opportunity for the exchange of constructive criticism in an area called The Trading Post where contributors could find others with similar interests to critique their creative efforts.
Many contributors in this project chose to be represented by an alias which gave them a sense of anonimity.
