Snow silences the shouts of children building forts in front gardens. It settles lightly on brittle branches, in the crevices of wooden picnic benches, on porch steps and birdfeeders and white picket fences. Inside, the scent of pine needles clings to carpets. There are choices.
A.) Finish holiday preparation: cookies, cards, presents. B.) Venture outside, shovel the driveway, rush into the last minute shopping blitz, four wheel drive clinging to icy roads. C) Curl up under an electric blanket with a new novel or a travel magazine with hot chocolate (extra marshmallows) while the snow twirls outside your window.

Welcome to my new life in London as an aspiring writer, journalist and photographer.

Saturday, 5:00pm GMT London
Above the city, the night sky is an empty blackboard with a chalk moon, the stars erased by light pollution. Seven million people: clogging the pavement near Oxford Circus for late night shopping; sipping tea in quiet bedrooms under thick duvets; clapping at the last act of a West End show; slipping slowly through the cracks of society pumping drugs into veins; slipping an arm around a lover for a stroll down South Bank along the winding Thames. Cars, busses, cabs: honk and swerve; delays on the tube. Magical lights, a busker’s tune, new gloves hold a latte to go. The whole world in one city.
